Rowing (crew), one of the first sports to assume its modern form, began to attract a following after the first boat race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge (1829) and the inauguration of the Henley Regatta (1839). “Athletics” became popular after Oxford and Cambridge held their first track-and-field meet in 1864. The Amateur Athletic Association, which emphasized track-and-field sports, was founded in 1880, the Amateur Rowing Association in 1882.
Sport can be undertaken on an amateur, professional or semi-professional basis, depending on whether participants are incentivised for participation (usually through payment of a wage or salary). Amateur participation in sport at lower levels is often called “grassroots sport”.
In the history of Ireland, Gaelic sports were connected with cultural nationalism. Until the mid-20th century a person could have been banned from playing Gaelic football, hurling, or other sports administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) if she/he played or supported Association football, or other games seen to be of British origin. The GAA banned the playing of football and rugby union at Gaelic venues. This ban, also known as Rule 42, is still enforced, but was modified to allow football and rugby to be played in Croke Park while Lansdowne Road was redeveloped into Aviva Stadium. Under Rule 21, the GAA banned members of the British security forces and members of the RUC from playing Gaelic games, but the advent of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 led to removal of the ban.

Dan Quinn sees another difference. The second-year Commanders head coach praised Daniels for becoming more assertive. Quinn highlighted a post-play conversation with tight end Ben Sinnott after a blitz-beating throw.

That communication doesn’t extend to the field with McLaurin — not yet. The veteran wideout reported to camp Sunday after skipping the first four practices and parts of the offseason program. He remains on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury while contract talks continue.
In the world of product names, quite often the names behind the companies are plainly evident. To wit, Rawlings Sporting Goods was named after its founders, brothers Alfred and George Rawlings. Another sporting goods giant, Spalding, was named after its founder, Albert Spalding. Pretty simple, eh? Even when things get a bit more confusing, many companies do a good enough job advertising their history so that while you might not know much about Greek goddesses, you might know that Nike is the Greek goddess of victory.
Adidas does not stand for “All Day I Dream About Sports.” The name originates from the founder, Adi Dassler, which is a combination of his nickname “Adi” and the first three letters of his last name “Dassler.”
During 1930s, both the brothers joined the Nazi Party lead by Adolf Hitler. During the World War II, Rudolf Dassler was captured by American war troops and Rudolf suspected his brother Adi as giving the tip to Americans which lead to his capture. As the result, the rift between the brothers grown big. In 1947, both the brothers split their ways resulting to the make of two brands for sports goods; ‘Puma’ by Rudolf Dassler in 1948 and ‘Adidas’ by Adolf Dassler in 1949.
When US forces approached the factory near the end of the war they decided not to destroy it, in part because Adi’s wife convinced them it made shoes and partly because Dassler had given his shoes to Jesse Owens at the Olympics nine years ago.
Adidas has transformed significantly since its inception. Founded in 1949, the brand initially focused solely on sports equipment. By the 1980s, Adidas branched into lifestyle footwear, blending performance with everyday wear. Collaborations with designers like Yohji Yamamoto and fashion lines such as Adidas by Stella McCartney elevated the brand’s status. The introduction of innovative technologies like Boost cushioning and Primeknit fabric marked a shift toward enhanced performance and comfort. Today, Adidas stands as a global leader in athletic and lifestyle markets, merging sports heritage with modern trends.
